Nocturnal Animals I

Artist: Paula Klien
Collab: JF Lemay

My paintings happen in water. The process involves submerging the artwork in traditional Chinese ink and water, sometimes on top of studio surfaces and sometimes in Brazilian river waters. The concept is vast but it focuses on the flow of our lives.

Nocturnal Animals are a separate arm of my body of work. I’ve always enjoyed drawing black and white imaginary animals. Then, I began digitally mixing these drawings with colorful weird objects shot in an aquarium. After blending these images in the computer, I mirrored them obtaining a Rorschach Test-like final Product. I named them digigraphies.

In 2016, when developing the ink and water paintings, I desaturated the digigraphies to make them match each other. Now I turned them back to their original colors and, with the collaboration of Canadian artist JF Lemay, who added life to my images.
